It was when researchers at the Condrik organization were out on a shark expedition outside Tenerife that they noticed something unusual.
A deep -sea marulk, which goes by the Latin name Melanocetus Johnsonii, swam just below the water surface.
Researchers: First pictures ever
According to the researchers, it may be the first time ever that a marulk of that type has been caught in the picture in daylight.
With a luminous rod between the eyes and its huge teeth, it has its own appearance.
– The teeth on it are really sturdy and they should probably be. Down there is dark. Then it is important to have teeth so that the prey gets stuck, says Didrik Vanhoenacker.
Died after reaching the surface
According to the researchers who found the Marulk, it died after a while. The reason should be that the fish was in poor condition.
– Probably it did not clear the pressure changes. Or it was sick or bad from the beginning, says Didrik Vanhoenacker.
Now the cadaver has been sent to the Tenerife Museum of Nature where it will be preserved.
See the clip: Great attention about the Marulk – the species is known from the movie “Find Nemo”.
