UTRECHT – Millions of employees are not well prepared for future developments in the labor market. This is reported by the CNV trade union in Utrecht after an investigation among 2200 members. The union therefore advocates a career check among workers that should take place every three years. Then everyone can respond to technological and digital developments.

85 percent of those surveyed say their job has changed in the past ten years. This translates to 7.6 million workers, the union calculates.

“If your work has changed in the past ten years, there is a good chance that your work will also change in the next ten years,” said CNV chairman Piet Fortuin. will still exist for ten years.

Not enough time for the next step

A majority of the respondents (66 percent) mainly follow courses within the field. Just over a quarter say they follow courses outside their field. More than half have too little time to consider the next step in their career. At only 6 percent, the employer fully pays for training outside the field.

There is therefore a task for employers, says Fortuin. “The labor market and the content of our work are changing faster and faster. Many factors play a role in this: technology, digitization, globalization and the energy transition. Both employers and employees must prepare for this transition.”
