Brynäs will give Börje Salming the ultimate tribute.
But the decision also arouses great criticism from supporters.

Passed away Börje Salming will be noticed and honored greatly during Brynä’s tribute match “Game for Börje” on February 11 in the home arena Monitor ERP arena. Today, Brynäs came with new information that Börje will also be immortalized with a flag of jersey number 17 that will be hoisted to the ceiling.

The nice gesture to the icon has been praised by most, but has also provoked stronger reactions than that. Within Brynä’s supporters, there has been an unexpected anger towards the gesture which the club itself calls “the ultimate tribute”.

The reason for the supporters’ criticism of Brynä’s tribute to Salming is based on the fact that the legend only played three seasons at the club. When he then returned home after the years in North America, it was instead a game in AIK.

Criticism of Brynäs
Now the supporter vents Viktor Alner his great disappointment with Brynä’s actions in a very critical column on SvenskaFans.
“The decision to change the criteria around the vape should have taken place within the framework of an annual meeting. The members should have had their say in the matter and not been completely overrun by the board. In this case, it is clear that the board made a decision guided by emotional arguments instead of consequential thinking and expertise. It is amateurish and the sad thing is that it affects how Brynäs wants to put a stamp on his history, his own identity,” he writes.

Alner believes that Brynäs had 30 years to pay tribute to Börje Salming for his deeds for the club, but that the club refused to do so. Until today when you turn around.
“The timing smells musty. It resembles profiteering rather than honoring a true hockey hero. A PR trick that tastes like coffee grounds. It’s not too late to change and do it right. Brynäs must make many strange decisions this season, but the club has previously shown that it can listen to the fans and change its decisions. Do it again Brynäs. Stop this madness while there is time – even if it is short!”, writes the supporter in his column.
Instead of a vepa in the ceiling, which is for the biggest club icons, Brynäs could have paid tribute to Salming in a different way. This is what Viktor Alner thinks, who ends his column with the following words:
“Brynäs could have honored Börje Salming in so many other ways and done it really nicely. The Game of Börje to be played on February 11 is a fantastic initiative – that alone would have been enough. Now the focus has shifted from a great event in Salming’s honor and for the progress of ALS research to this storm of criticism… Or why not also rename something in the arena after Börje Salming? Give him a named stand, a kiosk or why not rename Skybar after Börje? It would have been nice. But no, Brynäs took it a step too far… again,” writes the Brynäs supporter.
