Criticism of the Brödernas hockey team, which steps into classic Väsby IK, has been enormous.
Now Mika Zibanejad is forced to fight back.
“I have seen and understood that there have been many upset people,” writes the NHL star, who is one of the owners.
It was during Wednesday that the classic club Väsby IK called an extraordinary board meeting. There came the announcement that the association’s representative team will change its name and logo starting next season. The new name is Brödernas Väsby IK HK, and this means that the Brödernas hockey team, which now plays in division 3, is moving its operations to Väsby.
Huge criticism of the team
Brödernas is from the beginning a hamburger chain, backed by, among others, NHL star Mika Zibanejad. Profiles such as Dick Axelsson and Christian “Fimpen” Eklund have played in the team’s hockey team. As of next season, they are moving into Väsby, and that news has caused Swedish hockey supporters to rage.
On social media, the criticism is fierce, and many believe that Väsby is selling his soul, and letting his members and supporters down.
“Hope the members get an extra meeting to tear up the decision and remove the entire current board,” writes one.
“What the hell are you doing? Talk about pissing on your history. Rest in peace Vilda Väsby,” writes another.
“Exactly all of Sweden is against you, nice,” writes a third.

“Understand that many are upset”
The criticism has been so severe that Mika Zibanejad, one of the co-owners of Brödernas, is now forced to sign off on social media. The Rangers forward writes in a statement on social media that he too has been affected by the criticism.
“I have seen and understood that there have been many upset people as a result of the merger between Brödernas Hockey and Väsby. I have also received a number of messages sent to me from people who were upset and very unpleasant in connection with this,” he writes.
However, Zibanejad believes that, even though he is a co-owner, he did not know about the announcement, and that he would like to see that the focus is on hockey.
“I want to make it very clear that I have nothing to do with Brödernas Hockey’s decision-making, and saw this news at the same time as you. We are in the middle of an exciting season and of course I have all the focus on what I do here. There is only one Swedish club in my heart, and you know which #Djuuuu”.
