Visually stunning fantasy adventure from Steven Spielberg: The BFG roams the nighttime streets of London
The story is based on Roald Dahl’s children’s book The BFG from 1982, in this country under the title Sophie and the Giant has been published. It tells of an encounter between a little girl who lives in an orphanage in London and a giant who runs through the streets at night.

At first there are only powerful shadows before the giant reveals his true face. Contrary to many other Dahl stories, which tend to drift into the dark and macabre, the giant turns out to be friendly fellow. He doesn’t mean any harm to Sophie. Instead, he turns out to be lost and lonely.
Spielberg talks about this unlikely encounter very sensitive and uses some impressive staging tricks, especially with regard to the fusion of the actors (Ruby Barnhill as Sophie and Mark Rylance as BFG) and the digital fantasy worlds through which they move.
BFG – Big Friendly Giant is rich in color and fascinating settings, be it slumbering London or a mysterious place beyond our imagination. Spielberg playfully strolls around with his regular cameraman Janusz Kamiński, while John Williams’ music wraps itself carefully around the film.
A fairy tale full of sincere images and emotions: When BFG – Big Friendly Giant was released in cinemas in 2016, the film unfortunately did not reach a large audience. On a budget of $140 million, it only managed to gross $195 million, according to Box Office Mojo. That’s not enough for a blockbuster of this magnitude.
