Alicia Vikander played the bow-wielding adventurer in the 2018 film. But in May, film studio MGM lost the rights to the brand, as it has yet to officially greenlight a sequel, according to The Wrap.
Several studios are said to be interested in buying the rights, but Alicia Vikander is said to no longer be attached to the project.
One reason why the project seems to have run into the sand is that MGM was bought by Amazon, which then evaluates which films and brands it wants to invest in.
“Tomb raider” is from the beginning a series of games. The game rights are now owned by Swedish Embracer, since they bought the brand by buying, among other things, the developer Crystal Dynamics from Square Enix.
The film from 2018 grossed SEK 275 million according to Box Office Mojo, with an estimated budget of 94 million. As recently as June, it looked like Vikander would reprise the role.
— I love making action films, I want to do everything. One thing leads to another, she said then in a TT interview.
MGM has not commented on the data.
