UN warns of violent election in Liberia

“We are concerned about reports of election-related violence and the use of language approaching hate crimes,” says the spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Seif Magango.

The UN also notes that journalists are being attacked in Liberia.

“We call on the authorities to ensure that journalists can do their jobs, freely and safely,” says Magango.

Two parties are leading in the election campaign. The elections in Liberia, previously marred by protracted civil wars from 1989 to 2003, will be held in a first round on October 10.
