The UN-marked vehicle that was attacked in the Gaza city of Rafah on Monday was in an “active combat zone” at the time of the incident, the Israeli military said.
One UN staff member was killed and another was slightly injured in the attack, a spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres said on Monday. The two were reportedly on their way to a hospital in Rafah when the vehicle was hit.
“An initial investigation carried out indicates that the vehicle was hit in an area declared as an active combat zone,” the Israeli military said on Tuesday, claiming that the route of the vehicle had not been announced.
The military states that the incident is being investigated, but has not taken responsibility for the incident.
