UN Security Council votes unanimously for peace

Russia worrying about the maintenance of peace and security of Ukraine, alongside the other 14 members of the Council for the first time: would this mean a major diplomatic turning point? For some observers, this would confirm an initial movement towards UN diplomacy, while the Turkish and Israeli negotiation channels would not work so well.

Cautious diplomats

Other diplomats remain cautious, given how Russia has trampled on its commitments to the UN and its charter since its invasion of Ukraine on February 24, and said they remain vigilant after this statement. As for the Russian diplomats, they assure that this does not change Moscow’s approach in any way: they have a diametrically opposed interpretation of the Western camp of the words used in the text, quite simply. And recall the official rhetoric of “ battle for peace in Ukraine for 8 years in the Donbass.

The UN finally heard?

This first rallying of Moscow to the UN confirms above all that the Kremlin is finally paying attention to the mediation of the United Nations. What has certainly been unlocked as a result of the meeting between Antonio Guterres and Vladimir Putin last week.
