The Umbrella Academy season 4 drops on Netflix on August 8, 2024. But before you watch it, here’s everything you need to remember
The Hargreeves are bidding farewell for good. The dysfunctional superhero family, which had been a hit on Netflix for its first two seasons, is back to take its final bow. Season 4, the last of the series, is released on August 8 on the streaming platform. streaming at 9:01. Only 6 episodes are offered to conclude the intrigues of Viktor, Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Cinq and Ben.
Before we start the series finale, it’s best to keep the events of past episodes in mind. If we go back to basics, Umbrella Academy follows a dysfunctional family of superheroes, each raised to save the world by their adoptive father, Reginald Hargreeves. But trauma and tension get the better of them, and the gang disbands. Until the day their father dies, forcing them to reunite and unite to prevent an impending apocalypse. The series stars:
- Viktor, assigned female at birth who transitioned in Season 3 (like his actor, Elliot Page), whose powers, too powerful and too unstable, were hidden from him for many years
- Luther, the muscle man of the gang, whose body was that of a gorilla
- Diego, an expert in bladed weapons and a detective in his spare time
- Allison, an actress and mother who can influence people’s actions
- Klaus, who can control the dead, but suffers from drug and alcohol addiction. He discovers himself to be immortal
- Five, able to teleport, he lived for 40 years in the apocalypse of the future before returning to the present in the body of his 13 year old self.
- Ben, who died in his teens under unknown circumstances, fought with tentacles. During both seasons, and before his alternate version from Sparrow Academy took over the plot, only Klaus was able to communicate with him.
The end of season 3 ofUmbrella Academy
In Umbrella Academythe superhero band is tasked with foiling imminent apocalypses, first in their timeline, then in the 1960s. In the third season, the Hargreeves return to the present, but in an alternate version in which they do not exist, unlike the Sparrow Academy, almost identical to our heroes. During season 3, the two clans will clash until they discover that their father, Sir Reginald Hargreeves, used them to save his world and especially his wife, Abigail Hargreeves, so that their sacrifice would allow the reset of his universe. Allison had also made a pact with her father: in exchange for her help in convincing them to sacrifice themselves, he would allow her to find Ray and Claire, her husband and daughter who disappeared in the last time travels. But during the finale, Sir Reginald Hargreeves kills Klaus and Luther. Allison changes her mind at the last second and saves her siblings.
At the end of season 3 ofUmbrella Academythe universe has however been reset. If our heroes are not dead (even Luther and Klaus who come back to life), they have all lost their powers, while the Sparrows have disappeared (including Sloane, Luther’s wife), with the exception of Ben. For his part, Sir Reginald Hargreeves (who, let’s remember, is an alien) is alive and well, at the head of many companies, and his wife Abigail is alive and well. So many intrigues that will have to be dissected and resolved in the last 6 episodes of the series.

Elliot Page came out as transgender on December 2, 2020. The announcement came ahead of the release of season 3 of the Netflix series. At first, the show’s creators supported the actor but said it wouldn’t impact his character on The Umbrella Academy. But they eventually changed their minds, deciding to have his character be a trans man named Viktor. “The scripts were already done, and production was going to start in two weeks. We had to figure out how to incorporate his transition story into the plot of this ensemble series,” screenwriter Thomas Page McBee told Esquire. “We had to have his trans identity exist as a texture of the character, but not as a defining trait.” The writers worked with Elliot Page to offer the character and the audience a storyline that was as intimate as it was right for this fundamental member of the Hargreeves family: “It was an opportunity to show a transition that was so organic, so fundamental to this character, that it existed in concert with the narrative arcs of the existing characters, without overshadowing them.”
