Ulf Kristersson holds a press conference

The prime minister has had a meeting together with the party leaders for the other parliamentary parties on the occasion of the security situation. The military intelligence service (must) also participated in the meeting.

Kristersson now announces that it has a “solid plan ahead” for how Sweden should act in the current security situation.

– We are united behind Ukraine, we stand united on how Sweden should act in the EU, we have a broad consensus on the Swedish NATO membership, he says.

The Prime Minister also says that European countries must take responsibility for their security.

– In the long run, Europe cannot expect that it is mainly the United States that defends Europe. We must be able to defend ourselves to a greater extent, he says.

Four conclusions

He says he landed in four conclusions. The first is that “Russia’s goals and intentions” with the invasion in Ukraine are unchanged, he says.

– My second conclusion is that the United States today sounds quite different from what we have become accustomed to. We should not draw hasty conclusions from this, he says.

The third point the prime minister addresses is that the Swedish defense capability must be increased, and the fourth conclusion he mentions is that the EU has greater cooperation in the security situation.

“The EU is still very important, where the EU has such competence,” says Kristersson and addresses areas such as sanctions, procurement issues and industrial issues.

Jens B Nordström: The entire security policy map must be redirected

Talked to Macron about nuclear weapons

The prime minister also states that he “as late as last night” talked to French President Emmanuel Macron about the French nuclear umbrella, following the proposal for a common European nuclear weapons strategy.

– It’s pretty big what they do now, they have never opened the French nuclear program for anyone other than France. They are not under NATO’s broader command, they are also not under US command, which is important. They are now opening up for discussion, he says, states that it is “obvious” for Sweden to participate in the talks about a nuclear weapons strategy in Europe.

TV4’s political commentator Jens B Nordström says the statement shows a “complete re -drawing of the security policy map”.

– That Sweden speaks nuclear weapons with France had been a fever dream six months ago – today it is reality, he says in a comment.

– This means that Sweden must renovate faster and Europe must equip itself. Things are happening very fast in the security police situation right now, he says.

Concern: “Then we go towards a new cold war”

Kristersson emphasizes that how the war in Ukraine ends will affect Sweden’s security situation in the future.

– How the war in Ukraine eventually ends will say quite a lot about what new security situation Sweden is in, he says.

The prime minister also responds to what worries him most with the security situation.

– What I am most concerned about is that Russia perceives to succeed in what they were aiming for when they invaded Ukraine, then we go towards a new cold war for a long time to come, he says.
