Ukrainian strike reportedly killed dozens of Russian conscripts in Makeyevka

Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities on New Year’s Eve have not gone completely unanswered: footage is surfacing today on Russian and Ukrainian social media of a particularly deadly strike by the Ukrainian military on a group of Russian conscripts, news that enrages Russian nationalist circles.

The strike took place on the night of December 31, but the images were not made public until January 2. It shows the ruins of a multi-storey building, that of a former technical institute in the town of Makeïevka, in the part of Ukraine occupied by the Russian army. The building was completely razed. The Ukrainian military claims responsibility for the attack and says the building housed several hundred Russian soldiers, all recently drafted conscripts.

Criminal negligence?

The claim is at least partially confirmed by several Russian military sources. They mention a number of victims ranging from several dozen to several hundred, and many, in militarist and nationalist circles, are indignant at what they perceive as criminal negligence by the high command. The conscripts would have all been stationed in the same building, without any protection.

Worse, the building would also have housed a large ammunition depot. ” A typical example of military stupidity “Writes a very followed account on Telegram messaging which, like many others, demands exemplary sanctions. The Russian Ministry of Defense for its part did not comment on the news.
