The police have so far received about 15 witness statements about suspected war crimes in Ukraine from refugees who came to Sweden, reports Swedish Radio Ekot.

– It is mainly about assaults on civilians, it can be assaults on individuals or on several, both individual acts and attacks on civilian targets, says Patricia Rakic Arle, head of the group for investigation of war crimes at the police, to the radio.

In April, police began working actively to search for information from eyewitnesses who may have seen suspected war crimes.

Since then, about ten people have heard from and testified about their own experiences of war crimes and several more have suggested others who have been exposed.

Swedish prosecutors already in March began a preliminary investigation into a serious war crime.

It is a so-called structural preliminary investigation, without any designated suspect, which has been started in order to be able to gather evidence that can be found in Sweden as quickly as possible. In the future, the material may be used in legal proceedings here or in another state’s court, or in an international court such as the International Criminal Court (ICC).
