The accident when a construction lift collapsed 20 meters from a construction site in Sundbyberg is one of the deadliest workplace accidents in Sweden in modern times.
Several of the dead were not Swedish citizens.
On Wednesday, a memorial service was held for those who died, organized by the Syndicalist union’s Solidarity Builders subdivision.
– In our trade union, we have a lot of experience of people doing badly in the Swedish labor market, said Pelle Sunvisson from SAC during the memorial service.
One person a week dies at work
The Ukrainian construction worker Ivan Dmytroniak was also present.
Two years ago, he fell from a construction scaffold that was not properly assembled and broke his leg.
– My boss asked me to say that it happened on the way to work instead, says Ivan Dmytroniak.
He did as he was told and was paid for two months – before the manager stopped responding. The help with documents for a work permit that he had been promised also failed.
The last working year was the deadliest since 2011. On average, one person a week went to work and never returned home.
