On Fridays, we take a closer look at a news story that caught our attention. This week, it’s the war in Ukraine with the unexpected Ukrainian offensive in the Russian region of Kursk. We’re going to take a closer look at some maps, with Paul Véronique, a journalist in the World service of L’Express, a specialist in military issues.

Charlotte Baris: To start this episode, I am looking for maps from the World service of L’Express. They have updated and carefully put everything away for this new school year. The map I am looking for is precisely the one showing Russia and Ukraine, with the occupied territories, the combat zones and the advances of the troops.
Because today, we’re going to focus on a specific area: the Kursk Oblast. Kursk, maybe it reminds you, like me, of a submarine. You know, it’s a story that caused a lot of noise in August 2000. So that’s not the subject that interests us today, but rather what’s happening in the Kursk Oblast. Here, I have the map, and I’m going to join Paul Véronique, from the World service, who is waiting for me in the studio.
