Ukraine’s Heartbreaking Gesture During Euro Soccer – Shows Horror For Everyone In Germany: ‘A Very Important Message’

On Monday afternoon, Ukraine kicks off its EC premiere.
But before that, the Ukrainian Football Association has set up a bombed stand in Munich – to send a message to the outside world.
“Even if our stadiums are destroyed, we will never stop standing up for Ukraine,” the association writes in a statement.

The stands being set up were in Kharkiv at one of the stadiums that hosted the European Championship in 2012. But after Russia’s full-scale invasion, it, along with 76 other football stadiums, has been bombed to pieces.

Now the Ukrainian Football Association chooses to set up the stands inside Munich, where the team will play its EC premiere, to show its support for the people and the soldiers at home.

“The installation is made to show that Ukrainian football is not outside of politics. And even if our stadiums are destroyed, we will never stop standing up for Ukraine,” the association writes in a statement to Football Channel.

“All together”

Andrei Shevchenkoformer striker in, among others, Chelsea and Milan but now president of the Ukrainian Football Association, was the one who presented the stands on Monday.
– Today is the first match. There is a team on the field, but many soldiers who stand for Ukraine. We are all together. We are playing today for the country and for the people, who are defending our lives and our country, he told everyone present.

Shevchenko then goes on to say that Ukraine’s participation is not only important for the people at home, but also for the image of the country in the rest of the world.
– It is very important. There are two parts. One is the sporting part, as it is important that the country can continue to live during the war. Sport has a power to unite people. That Ukraine participates in the EC is also a very important message to the rest of the world that we continue our lives and will fight.

Ukraine’s European Championship opener against Romania starts at 3pm on Monday.
