The International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) warned that most of the weapons sent to Ukraine could fall into the black market after the war and fall into the hands of criminal organizations.
Interpol Secretary General Jürgen Stock pointed out that the circulation of weapons in Ukraine is very intense, and said that this situation will lead to the rapid spread of smuggled weapons inside and outside Europe after the war.
Stating that organized crime organizations are already increasingly globalized and have the capacity to use the chaotic situation in Ukraine for their own benefit, Stock said, “This will happen. I have no doubt. Criminal organizations are already focused on this.”
Call to “use weapon tracking systems”
Western countries are piling up weapons and ammunition, including heavy weapons, to Ukraine for defense against Russia’s attacks. US President Joe Biden announced today a $700 million package that includes shipping more advanced rocket systems and ammunition to Ukraine.
Interpol Secretary General Stock warned that any weapon used by the armies, including heavy weapons, could fall into the hands of criminal organizations. Reminding that Interpol has a database where information on weapons is shared, Stock said, “We invite member countries to use this database. Because no country or region can cope with this situation alone. The criminal organizations I mentioned work globally, so these weapons will circulate between continents. ‘ he said.
