Ukraine should show courage for “white flag” and negotiate

The statement comes from an interview with Swiss broadcaster RSI last month, to be broadcast on March 20, Reuters reports.

During the interview, the Pope is asked where he stands in the debate between those who think Ukraine should surrender because they are unable to repel Russian forces, and those who claim it would legitimize Russia’s actions.

The interviewer uses the term “white flag” in the question, to which the Pope replies that it is a question of interpretation before continuing:

– But I think the strongest is the one who looks at the situation, thinks about the people, and has the courage of the white flag and negotiates.

– The word negotiate is a brave word. When you see that you are defeated, that things are not going well, you must have the courage to negotiate, says Franciskus.

It is the first time Pope Francis has used the words “white flag” and “defeated” when talking about the war in Ukraine, writes Reuters.

Ukraine has not commented on the statement.
