A brigade accused of war crimes is already returning to fighting in eastern Ukraine, Ukrainian intelligence says. According to Ukraine, the soldiers have been placed on a dangerous front because Russia does not want them to witness possible trials.
The atrocities committed by Russian soldiers against the civilians in Bashan had hardly spread to the world’s consciousness when the Ukrainian authorities had already released information about the units suspected of guilt.
Last week, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense published a list of more than 1,600 soldiers on its website. The list includes all the soldiers of the 64th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade of the 35th Russian Army.
According to Ukrainian intelligence, it is this brigade that has perpetrated the killing, torture and rape of Bushan civilians.
The information is based on, among other things, the findings of eyewitnesses, the mass units of Russian soldiers taken prisoner of war, and telephone and radio communications.
Although all the soldiers on the list have hardly been guilty of war crimes, and many have also been killed and wounded in fierce fighting, their information has begun to be searched on the internet. Both official intelligence services and IT volunteers in Ukraine and internationally are involved.
For example, Estonian hackers have placed soldiers on a map based on where their passports have been issued. The map shows that they are from all over Russia. Many are from Khabarovsk, where the base of their troops is also located.
The map has been tweeted by an Estonian politician and former intelligence chief Eerik-Niiles Kross.
Soldiers were ordered to break into homes
In addition to the 64th Infantry Brigade, the list published by Arestovich mentions the 104th and 234th regiments of the 76th Landing Division in Pskov, near the Estonian border.
News wrote on March 8 that parts of the 76th Landing Division have apparently been involved in both the Battle of Butša and the battles of Hostomel, or Antonov Airport. In Butcha, Ukrainian forces destroyed a very dense formation of Russian columns.
A video featuring a soldier from the 76th Landing Division who was captured by the Ukrainians has been shown on social media in late March.
This is known to have happened in Butcha. Plenty of bodies have also been found in the cellars.
The commander received the blessing of the church
Instead, Commander of the 64th Infantry Brigade, Lieutenant Colonel Azatbek Omurbekov is reportedly still alive and being chased on the internet. He is already called the butcher of Butshan, The Butcher of Bucha.
Among other things, the activist group InformNapalm, which utilizes open intelligence, has published a lot of personal information about him, including his home address.
Omurbekov is known to have been blessed by the bishop of Khabarovsk, the Russian Orthodox Church, for his military duties in November 2021.
Omurbekov has also received a military medal for his outstanding service in 2014.
Brigade returning to battle
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, Russian troops were withdrawn from Butch on March 30.
According to Ukrainian data, they were transported by train to the Russian city of Belgograd near the Ukrainian border as early as 6 April. It is known that they are to be returned to Kharkov for fighting.
Ukraine’s defense ministry says in a statement that Russian troops drawn from battles usually get much more rest. According to the ministry, such a short rest period suggests that the 64th Brigade is needed for some special mission.
According to the release, experienced troops have been returned to disturb the civilian population in the area. On the other hand, they may be wanted in an area where survival is difficult. According to Ukrainians, they are not wanted to witness possible trials.
Ukraine’s intelligence did not say where it bases this information. Nor, at least for the time being, are there any indications that the brigade has already joined the fighting.
The Kadyrovites stood out with their colors
Butcha is known to have had troops in addition to the 64th Brigade. Chechens serving in the Chechen Autonomous Armed Forces do not appear in Ukrainian intelligence, but according to many eyewitness accounts, they have also been in Bocha.
Ukrainians call Chechen fighters Kadyrite citations, citing Chechen president To Ramzan Kadyrov. In late March, even Kadyrov himself was alleged to be in Ukraine, in Ivankiv, north of Bushan. However, the Ukrainian intelligence service says that the information is incorrect (you move to another service).
Instead, there have been fighters in the area. The Chechen uniform is green-black and is clearly distinguished from the Russian uniforms. Many of the atrocities against civilians, according to the locals, have been done by them.
As early as the beginning of March, social media reported on the killing of civilians in Bocha based on eyewitness accounts.
The troops were stationed near the town of Borodyanka, and it is also known in the area that civilians have been subjected to atrocities.
Also the Commissioner for Human Rights of Ukraine Lyudmyla Denisova has said (you are switching to another service)that more than 600 patients at Borodyanka Mental Hospital were taken hostage by Chechen forces.
Chechen fighters were drawn near Kiev on March 13 when their fighting did not progress.
In Bocha, many eyewitnesses have said in both the Ukrainian and international media that there were young Russian soldiers in the city at the start of the war, many of whom were even polite to civilians. Later, when the 64th Infantry Brigade and Chechen troops arrived in the city, blatant violence began, eyewitnesses have said.
The information has not yet been objectively confirmed.
Also infamous mercenaries
U.S. intelligence sources, among others, have said that the troops in Butchha can be identified. Identification is currently a very important priority for intelligence, said source to CNN (switch to another service).
The culprits are also being sought in Germany. German newspaper Der Spiegel (go to another service) BND told the German intelligence service that it was in possession of radio traffic reports of violence by Russian soldiers. Some of the events can even be linked to the bodies of photographs.
It is known from the BND material that the infamous Wagner mercenaries would also have been involved in the events. Der Spiegel does not say what the information is based on.
Wagner mercenaries have committed atrocities against civilians in Syria, among others.
Washing machine packages with video
Belarusian activists, meanwhile, have published more than three hours video (switch to another service)which is said to originate from the Belarusian courier service office in the city of Mozyr in Belarus.
The video shows Russian soldiers mailing goods allegedly stolen from people’s homes and shops in Ukraine, including washing machines, air conditioners, toys and electric kickboards.
The soldiers in the video are, as a rule, apparently from the 56th Landing Brigade and are not mentioned in the list of suspects in the Ukrainian data. However, according to Ukrainian intelligence, the Bashan suspects have also been transported through the city of Mozyr.
The video that was leaked now is probably not the whole truth about the packages that left Russia recently through the office. Activists are now looking for information and then comparing it to Butch’s list of names.
In addition to the Ukrainian authorities, many volunteers also swear to find war criminals.
