Ukraine says it killed around 400 Russian soldiers in an attack on a Russian-controlled village in Donetsk on New Year’s Eve. From the Russian side, it is confirmed that a school building was hit by Himars rockets, but then a significantly lower death toll is stated.

The school building in Makijivka was shelled with the US Himars artillery system a few minutes after midnight on New Year’s Eve, according to a Telegram post by a representative of the occupying forces in Donetsk. The building is said to have housed many Russian soldiers.

From the official Russian side, it was initially said that there were around ten injured. As information about the scale of the attack began to trickle out through other Russian voices, a new offer came from the Russian Ministry of Defense. It confirms that a “temporary station” near Makijivka was attacked with Himars rockets and states that more than 60 Russian soldiers were killed.

The unofficial Russian comments have made it appear that something disastrous has happened in Makijivka and that the top Russian commanders do not seem to have learned from past mistakes. Among other things, the ex-military as well as the influential commentator Igor Girkin writes that many remain under the racial masses and that the number of dead and injured will reach several hundred.
