Ukraine: Over 50 dead after attack on Poltava

Two robots are said to have struck shortly after the flight alarm sounded and the people in the area are said not to have had time to take cover. At 5:30 p.m., Swedish time, the emergency services were still looking for victims in the racial masses.

– It was a ballistic robot, i.e. a robot you cannot control, that was used. Here it seems as if the Russians, seen from their perspective, hit the target they wanted and which they claim is a military target, says SVT’s foreign reporter Bert Sundström.

  • “Barbaric Attack”

According to President Zelenskyi, an educational activity belonging to the military’s communications institute and a hospital should have met. Damage must also have occurred in a nearby residential area.

The institute trains young cadets, as well as experienced military personnel, according to it website.

“Russia has carried out a barbaric attack on one of the city’s educational institutions,” writes Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense.

A mourning period of three days has been announced in the city, which is located in eastern Ukraine, about 10 miles from the Russian border.

The incident is one in a series of very bloody attacks against Ukraine during the course of the war. Last July, 42 people were killed in an attack on a children’s hospital in Kiev. Up to 200 were injured.

    – There is a huge attack against Ukraine that goes on from Russia every day, says Bert Sundström.

“Has not previously followed the laws of war”

Roger Djupsjö, major and teacher at the Norwegian Defense Academy, sees the attack as part of Russia’s tactics to spread fear in Ukraine.

    – It remains to be seen what kind of target this was, if you fought a civilian target it is against the laws of war, but a military target is after all allowed to be fought. Russia has previously not followed the laws of war at all, but fought civilian facilities, hospitals and shopping centers, he says in SVT’s live broadcast.

    Russia has not yet commented.
