Hungary is blocking the EU’s proposal to introduce new sanctions against Russia and a new support package for Ukraine.

– The only solution is a ceasefire, says Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in an interview with Bloomberg.

– If you look at reality, if you look at the numbers, if you look at the surroundings, if you look at the facts. NATO is not ready to send troops, says Viktor Orbán in the interview.

– It is obvious that the poor Ukrainians do not win on the battlefield, he continues.

Viktor Orbán says he is convinced that there is no chance for Ukraine to win the war, and that it is therefore most important to save lives.

– What we should put much more energy into is convincing everyone that the only solution is a ceasefire, he says.

For just over two weeks, the EU countries have supported and undermined the European Commission’s proposal for further sanctions regarding the Russian war in Ukraine. Hungary, in particular, firmly says no for the time being, both to the sanctions and to additional financial support for buying weapons on behalf of Ukraine.

One reason that has been highlighted is Hungary’s anger at the Hungarian bank OTP being placed on Ukraine’s blacklist of international companies deemed to be helping Russia.

– If a country like Ukraine wants your financial support, which is necessary for them, they cannot blacklist your companies, says Viktor Orbán to Bloomberg.
