Ukraine has no shortcut into the EU

Ukraine’s process of joining the EU cannot be accelerated despite Russia’s invasion, says German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

He adds that the EU must find another, “fast and pragmatic” way of supporting Kyiv in the short term.

– There are no shortcuts into the EU, says Scholz and adds that an exemption for Ukraine would be unfair to the countries in the Western Balkans that have also applied for membership.

Ukraine has asked for a fast track into the EU after the Russian invasion.

– The connection process is not a matter of a few months or years, says Scholz.

French President Emmanuel Macron has previously said that it will take “decades” for a candidate like Ukraine to join the EU.
