Ukraine emergency aid package to US Senate next week – progress uncertain due to Republican opposition | Foreign countries

The Senate has been negotiating the support package for months. The Republicans have tried to include in the package a solution to the migrant situation on the country’s southern border.

The US Senate will vote next week on a package that will promote border security and increase support for Israel and Ukraine, the leader of the Senate Democrats said on Thursday Chuck Schumer.

– We can’t just avoid our responsibility if the task is difficult, Schumer told the Senate. He added that the package will be tentatively voted on on Wednesday at the latest.

US President Joe Biden asked Congress last October to approve an emergency aid package of 106 billion dollars, or almost 98 billion euros, of which 61 billion dollars have been presented to Ukraine and 14 billion dollars to Israel.

Republicans tight for the package

The Senate has been negotiating the support package for months. Republicans have tried to include in the package a solution to the immigration situation on the country’s southern border, where the number of immigrants who crossed the border illegally has risen to a record during Biden’s presidency.

Former President of the United States Donald Trump has demanded that the package be rejected. Trump enjoys high popularity among House and Senate Republicans, which is believed to prevent the aid package from moving forward.

Also Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson has expressed his doubts about the package last week.

– From what I’ve heard, this so-called agreement does not include revolutionary changes to the policies that are needed to stop the disaster at the border, Johnson said.

Instead, the unattached senator from Arizona negotiated the package Kyrsten Sinema said the proposed deal would end the release of migrants who crossed the border illegally, allow emergency officials to close the border and overhaul the country’s asylum-seeking system.

– We are changing the policies dramatically.
