This weekend, the world’s leaders have gathered in Delhi, India, among other things to talk about the war in Ukraine. After Saturday’s meetings, the G20 countries have made several official statements, including one on the situation in Ukraine.
They write, among other things, that “all states must refrain from using threats or the use of force to try to conquer land”, according to CNN.
Does not mention Russia
The channel draws attention to the fact that the leaders, who represent countries such as the United States, Russia, China and Turkey, do not agree on the war in Ukraine.
The statement states, among other things, that “there are different opinions and assessments of the situation”.
Compared to the statement after last year’s G20 summit, where most members strongly condemned the war in Ukraine, this year’s message is more cautious. For example, Russia is not mentioned in this year’s statement.
In Ukraine, the statement has caused great anger. Oleh Nikolenko, spokesperson for Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, shared the statement on social media, but corrected some sentences in red pen.
For example, “the war in Ukraine” has been replaced by “the war against Ukraine”.
Ukrainian anger: “Has consequences”
“Ukraine thanks the allies who tried to include strong wording in the text. But at the same time, when it comes to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the G20 group has nothing to be proud of,” he writes on X.
Another part of the criticism concerns the joint statement on the grain agreement, where Russia demanded eased sanctions in order to sign a new agreement.
“Even the slightest lifting of sanctions against Russia or discussions that suggest such an alternative have consequences,” writes Mychajlo Podoljak, adviser to President Volodymyr Zelenskyi on social media.
