(Finance) – TheInternational Atomic Energy Agency (Aiea) considers it urgent to apply measures to prevent a accident nuclear resulting from physical damage caused by military means. In a report, the agency explained that this can be achieved with the immediate establishment of one nuclear safety and security zone and it says it is ready to immediately start consultations leading to the urgent establishment of this area.
Aiea also stressed that she was still seriously worried about the situation: “the current situation” in the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant “is unsustainable”. The inspectors have in fact detected damage at several points of the plant, some of them near the reactor buildings and the one that houses fresh nuclear fuel and the solid radioactive waste storage facility. Some works of repair had already been carried out or were in progress, but further work will be required to repair any damage caused.
The team of inspectors who visited the plant also observed the presence of Russian military personnel, vehicles and equipment in various locations, including several military trucks on the ground floor of the two-unit turbine halls and some parked under the flyover connecting the reactor units. The personal Ukrainian operating in the Russian-controlled plant, Aiea still reports, is constantly subjected to strong pressure.
Today one powerful explosion was heard after 12 in the city of Energodar, in the Zaporizhzhia region, where the largest nuclear power plant in Europe is located. “At 12.20 today, the residents of Energodar reported that a powerful explosion was heard in the city. Immediately afterwards the electricity and water were cut off at the same time,” the mayor explained to the Ukrainian news agency UNIAN. Dmytro Orlov. Orlov did not provide any other details, adding only that investigations are currently underway.
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that the Ukrainian army fired 15 times in the last 24 hours on the city using artillery.
