Across the Atlantic, unidentified flying objects are once again being talked about. A petition, launched on February 10, 2022 on the site Change.orgchallenges several American senators, including the former presidential candidate Marco Rubio, in order to reveal to the general public documents that can attest to UFO sighting. The request is particularly aimed at theUnidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force (UAP, or “Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force”), a government program to monitor such phenomena. The organization had notably published a report on videos made public in 2021 concerning the overview of a United States warship by UFOs, the authenticity of which had been validated by the Pentagon.
UFOs, an American passion
According to Space.com, the instigator of the petition, Adam Goldsack, would be of British origin. But this request is rooted in the purest tradition of observing and recording unidentified aerial phenomena in the United States.
During the XXand century, many stories and urban legends have thus become part of American culture, from the second half of the 1940s with the Roswell affair in 1947, Kenneth Arnold’s observation of a “flying saucer” the same year or again the “kidnapping” of Betty and Barney Hill in 1961. With the arrival ofInternetreports of UFO sightings became popular, often accompanied by videos during the 2000s.
On Youtube, there is thus an incalculable quantity of more or less well faked videos, which have fueled heated debates in the comment sections of the platform. But some stories and documents have taken on an aura of credibility, so much so that the subject UFOs eventually spilled over into the 2016 United States Presidential Candidate Program. hillary clinton declared on the talk-show set hosted by Jimmy Kimmel to be an “enthusiast for UFOs” and to want to open a study office dedicated to these phenomena, like the television series X-Files. During his mandate, Donald Trump also maintained the mystery around unidentified flying objects, and declared in 2020 that he wanted declassify the file regarding the Roswell incident.
A seriously studied phenomenon
In 2020, three videos filmed by the US Navy are unveiled to the general public; nicknamed flirt, gofast and gimbals, they cause a stir on the social networks. We discover the flight of aircraft with unusual shapes with the undecided and surprised comments of the pilots finding themselves in front of these phenomena. Many politicians then feared the overflight of two warships, the USS Omaha and the USS Russell, by spy devices of a new kind.

One report published in 2021 by the UAP Task Force validated the veracity of the videos with the support of the Pentagon and the US Navy. In June, the monitoring body declared that between 2004 and 2021, nearly 143 aerial phenomena observed remained, to date, unidentified. Adam Goldsack then launched his petition at the beginning of February 2022, calling for “civilians to be able to investigate”, arguing about a scientific aspect to this “participatory” approach.
So far, Goldsack’s petition has garnered nearly 3,660 signatures, more than double the originally requested amount of 1,500 pledges. Corn radio silence on the side of the UAP which has still not reacted to the requests (perhaps too optimistic?) of the Briton.
