UEFI is required to use AMD RX 9070

AMD’s new RX 9070 graphics cards are only working with UEFI support. This may cause problems for users with systems using old BIOS.

AMDintroduced the new generation RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT graphics cards. However, you will need a UEFI -supported motherboard to use these cards. According to the company’s statement, the RX 9000 series and all the graphics cards that will be released will be “only supported UEFI”. This can create some difficulties for players with Windows 10 and with an old BIOS system.

AMD RX 9070 and UEFI requirement

Unified extensible firmware interface (UEFI) is a more modern system that replaces the traditional BIOS and is usually found in motherboards under 10 years of age. UEFI offers advantages such as faster opening times, better safety features and large capacity disk support. However, for users with old motherboards, this requirement can make it difficult to switch to RX 9070 graphics cards.

Microsoft’s Windows 11 operating system also requires UEFI support, so many users have already passed into the UEFI system. However, according to Steam user data, more than 40 %of players still use Windows 10 and some prefer old BIOS systems. AMD’s decision may cause performance and compatibility problems for users with old systems.

Although AMD said in a statement that the RX 9070 may work on old BIOS systems or in UEFI’s Compatibility Support Module (CSM) mode, performance is not guaranteed in these cases. In other words, users who want to get full efficiency from the RX 9070 graphics card will have to pass into a UEFI supported motherboard.

For Windows 10 users, this brings another problem. Microsoft will completely end its support to Windows 10 in eight months. For this reason, transition to UEFI in terms of both the operating system and hardware compatibility becomes inevitable. Although AMD’s RX 9070 graphics cards promise strong performance, this UEFI requirement may cause additional cost or upgrade for players using old systems.
