The European football association Uefa suspended Spain’s national team players Alvaro Morata and Rodri.
The European football association Uefa has appointed the star players of the Spanish national team Alvaro Morata and Rodrin to a ban of one national team match. The incident is related to the duo’s behavior at the team’s championship celebration, when Morata and Rodri yelled at the crowd “Gibraltar is Spain”.
The celebration took place in Madrid a day after the team won European Championship gold against England in mid-July.
According to UEFA’s disciplinary decision the players violated the general operating principles. They used the sporting event for “non-sporting manifestations” and undermined the reputation of football and especially the European Football Association.
The Gibraltar Football Association made a complaint to UEFA about the incident. The union described the national festival as “extremely provocative” and offensive. Gibraltar is an enclave at the southern tip of Spain that has been under British rule since the 18th century. Spain has long demanded its return.
