Ubisoft’s shooter was supposed to compete with Call of Duty, but now the end is certain

In the past few months, despite corresponding reports and falling player numbers, the chief developer has repeatedly asserted that XDefiant is by no means dying. But now he too had to swallow the bitter pill and announce the end.

What were XDefiant’s problems? XDefiant is a fast-paced PvP shooter from Ubisoft that should compete with Call of Duty in the medium term with its service model. The game came out after postponements in May 2024 and has since been expanded for two seasons.

    The special features of XDefiant:

  • There is no skill-based matchmaking (SBMM for short) in certain game modes.
  • The playable factions, all of which have different abilities and gadgets, are based on well-known Ubisoft game series such as The Division, Splinter Cell and Watch Dogs.
  • After a solid start, the PvP shooter struggled with falling player numbers, and cheaters and problems with the engine also caused frustration. Over the past few weeks, reports have emerged from industry insiders predicting the demise of XDefiant unless a miracle occurs.

For their part, the developers were careful to emphasize again and again that there were no plans for the game to end. For example, it was explained that the low number of players was also due to the fact that little energy was being put into marketing. However, they only want to do that once the shooter’s biggest problems have been fixed.

It is now clear that this will no longer happen. By the way, MeinMMO author Cedric Holmeier was already skeptical after the test weekend in April 2024 that the Ubisoft shooter could become a big hit.
