Ubisoft wants to promote fair cooperation in Rainbow Six Siege and integrates a system that recognizes players with a mouse and keyboard on consoles – and punishes them for it.
What is the problem with keyboard & mouse? The keyboard and mouse are connected to a console via an adapter. The consoles do not recognize that this is not a controller, so players can use the aim assist.
Mouse, keyboard plus aim assist is a combination that can be described as unfair. Some even call it cheating.
Here you can see a trailer for the current Rengoku event in Rainbow Six Siege:
Developers want to improve fair play in Rainbow Six Siege
How are the developers doing it? Ubisoft wants to promote fair gaming in Rainbow Six Siege. Thus, they “punish” gamers who connect a mouse and keyboard to their consoles, so-called “spoofers”, with annoying lags.
On the Ubisoft website they write:
MouseTrap is a new detection system that penalizes the use of mouse and keyboard on consoles by giving additional [Lags] and encouraging them to use their controller again. Our goal is to restore a true balance between competition and skill to improve fair play in Rainbow Six Siege.

Ubisoft doesn’t want to ban the “spoofers” directly, but rather give them a chance to “change their behavior and play fairly.” With success.
What were the consequences? According to Ubisoft, it resulted in a 78% reduction in the total number of mouse and keyboard users. In ranked mode it is 73% (via Ubisoft.com). That exceeded their expectations.
A cheater can ruin the gaming experience for hundreds of players in a single match. Free2Play titles in particular often have problems with cheaters and hackers, but there was a last-minute rescue for one player:
CoD Warzone 2 bans cheaters at just the right moment – “I would not have thought that possible in my life!”
