Two years later the surcharge affair is still major trauma

The Tax and Customs Administration has various schemes to compensate parents. This includes, for example, the childcare allowance to which the parent was actually entitled, but also, for example, compensation for costs incurred, such as paying interest and calling in legal assistance. The parents will also receive a compensation of 25 percent on the amount they originally had to repay incorrectly. In addition to this material damage, the Tax and Customs Administration provides compensation for the immaterial damage, the worries and suffering of the parents. This is about 500 euros per six months.

Affected parents receive a minimum of 30,000 euros. At present, more than 23,000 parents have received this amount. Later, during the integral assessment, the exact amount to which victims are entitled will be examined. If this is higher, it will still be paid. If it is lower, the parents do not have to repay.

Many parents have to wait a long time for the integral assessment. At the moment, more than 36,000 parents are waiting for a full assessment of their situation. Parents who registered at the end of 2021 or this year will be assessed in 2025 or 2026. The Tax and Customs Administration writes on their site that they believe that the integral assessment is taking too long and that they want to adjust the working method.

According to the Tax and Customs Administration, it is taking so long, among other things, because many parents have registered, namely almost 59,000, and because each situation must be viewed separately.
