The next Rambo will be platinum blonde. At least that’s what many fans of the action franchise could read from Sylvester Stallone’s recent words: The Hollywood star wants to see Ryan Gosling as his successor in the warrior role. And despite Barbie hair color and rollerblades, it’s a good choice. If you don’t believe it, just watch Drive and Only God Forgives.
Ryan Gosling shocks more in two films than Sylvester Stallone’s entire Rambo series
Both films are the work of Nicolas Winding Refn, who largely owes them his status as a cult director. Both tell a noir story about men with mysterious pasts in beautiful, neon-soaked images. And both are mercilessly brutal.

Ryan Gosling in Drive
In Drive, an unnamed getaway car driver (Gosling) is drawn into a heist, after which he fails is targeted by unscrupulous criminals. Suddenly he has to choose between love and violence. The peaks of violence do not dominate the entire film. But when they arrive, it is with unbelievable severity.
In Only God Forgives Gosling plays an American in Thailand who runs drug deals behind the facade of a martial arts club. When his brother kills an underage prostitute, Gosling’s character finds himself caught between two fronts.
The brutality in both films is far more disturbing than that of the Rambo franchise. So anyone looking at Gosling’s powdered Ken face who has forgotten how much blood runs down the star’s face in Refn’s films should be reminded of this. Gosling is not Stallone, that’s obvious. But just like Stallone He cuts a good figure amidst violent excesses and dark pasts. It doesn’t matter whether the action star is serious about succeeding Rambo or not.
