two planter organizations make their voices heard

In Ivory Coast, several cocoa producers continue to demand an increase in cocoa selling prices. About ten days ago, the Minister of Agriculture had set the farm gate price at 1,500 FCFA, per kg, for the intermediate season which extends until the end of September. Gathered on Friday, April 12, at a General Assembly in Daloa, two organizations of cocoa farmers are demanding several improvements in the working conditions of farmers.

Synap CI and Anaproci, two organizations of cocoa farmers, are demanding an increase in the margins paid to producer cooperatives. They are calling for a review of the texts which govern the marketing of cocoa because “ these texts do not sufficiently protect producers in the event of a disaster », Estimates Koffi Kanga, the president of Anaproci.

Concerning the price of cocoa for the intermediate season, these two organizations welcome the increase granted by the authorities, but they would have liked an even higher price, set at 2,500 CFA/kg, compared to 1,500 FCFA currently.

In recent days, two opposition political parties have also defended this proposal.

More than 80% of our cocoa producers live below the poverty line, while Ivory Coast produces 40% of the world’s cocoa production. », indignant Simon Doho, representative of the PDCI parliamentary group, in the Assembly

For his part, the Minister of Agriculture recalls that price increases on world markets “ are reflected with an offset “, Côte d’Ivoire having opted for an advance sales system, in order, he said, ” to ensure stability of production and prices “.
