Two pedestrians killed in crash near Charing Cross

The long weekend took a tragic turn as two pedestrians in their 60s were killed in a crash just north of Charing Cross on Saturday night.

At 7:11 pm, emergency crews responded to a motor vehicle collision on Charing Cross Road, Chatham-Kent police said.

“A vehicle traveling north on Charing Cross Road struck two pedestrians near Horton Line,” police said in a release Sunday morning.

“Responding emergency personnel attempted lifesaving measures, but both women, a 66-year-old and a 68-year-old succumbed to their injuries.

“The Chatham-Kent police extends condolences to the families during this difficult time.”

The identities of the women weren’t released. A post-mortem examination has been scheduled.

Charing Cross is a small community about 10 minutes south of Chatham. The road was closed to traffic in both directions for several hours after the crash. The Chatham-Kent police mobile command center was also onsite, along with a team of investigators.

Police at the scene Saturday evening told The Daily News they couldn’t provide information on the incident, but that further details would be provided when available.

South Kent Coun. Anthony Ceccacci, who represents the community as part of his ward, was saddened by the news.

“Firstly, my thoughts and prayers extend to all the family and friends during this very difficult and tragic time. I offer them my sincere condolences,” he told The Daily News on Sunday.

“I’d also like to express my sincere gratitude to all first responders: EMS, police, fire and dispatchers. My thoughts are with all those affected who answer these calls and serve our community so valuably.”
