Two of the best westerns of the last 20 years

The 21st century has turned its back on the Western – at least for the most part. Every now and then a director tries his hand at the time-honored genre. Two typical modern westerns are still available to stream on Netflix for a short time.

Western 1: Star power on death train to Yuma

Disappears from Netflix on: December 13, 2023

It’s all about this: In Death Train to Yuma, James Mangold sends the two massive star egos of Christian Bale and Russell Crowe into a dynamic drama. The remake of the short story Three-Ten to Yuma is set in 1884.

The impoverished civil war invalid Dan Evans (Bale) struggles with his family for economic survival. He and his sons witness a stagecoach robbery by Ben Wade (Russell Crowe) and his gang. Wade is caught and Evans can prove himself: He is supposed to take the gangster to the train station from where the train leaves for Yuma to the state prison. The journey becomes a psychological duel between the poor but righteous farmer and the rich but criminal gangster.

Disappears from Netflix on: December 14, 2023

It’s all about this: A small town somewhere on the Texas-Mexico border is attacked in the middle of the night by a group of brutal natives. They kidnap Arthur O’Dwyer’s (Patrick Wilson) wife, Samantha (Lili Simmons). A rescue mission begins, but under bad auspices: Arthur has a bad leg, the sheriff (Kurt Russell) and his deputy Chicory (Richard Jenkins) are old. A beacon of hope is the gunslinger John Brooder (Matthew Fox). Together they venture into enemy territory. And there begins a horror the likes of which the Western genre has rarely seen.
