Two new wind farms are to be built offshore

SVT Nyheter broadcasts the press conference directly from 08.25 on the site and during Morgonstudion’s broadcast.

It is about OX2, which gets permission to build an offshore park of 21 wind turbines outside Varberg, and Vattenfall, which gets permission to build Kattegatt Syd consisting of 80 wind turbines outside Falkenberg.

– We gave the green light for a total of around a hundred wind turbines in two offshore parks, which will provide fossil-free electricity in a region that is in great need of this, says Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M).

According to the government, it will take between seven and ten years to complete the parks. Together, they provide an electricity supplement equivalent to a normal-sized nuclear power plant. Initiatives also exist to shorten permitting processes to speed up the construction of wind power.

– Together with nuclear power, they make a big contribution. It is needed when Sweden is to double electricity production until the year 2045, says Kristersson.

“Important to meet the climate goals”

Energy and Food Minister Ebba Bush says that today’s announcement is welcome news.

– In order to get out of the energy crisis in the long term, there are no quick ways forward, we need to do the right thing and we need to rebuild a robust electricity system again. It is necessary if we are to cope with the green transition and meet the climate goals while securing the transition of the industry.

SVT’s political reporter Karolina Skoglund analyzes the announcement on air:

– It is big and important. One thing they did not answer, however, is exactly how the financing of this should look like. They have put a lot of pressure on it in the Tidö agreement that it should bear its own costs. They might come to it, but it wasn’t something they pushed, she says.
