The two brothers, formerly members of the opposition Samajwadi party and imprisoned for their criminal past, were named Ashraf and Atiq Ahmed. The latter had recently turned to the Supreme Court to request enhanced police protection due to death threats. His son, also a mafia, was shot dead on Thursday April 13 by the security forces of Uttar Pradesh.

The president of the Muslim party AIMIM (All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen) has also demanded the resignation of Yogi Adityanath, saying that this crime in cold blood could only be the work of professionals. The chief minister said he would not tolerate any rumors and that an investigation was opened into the assailants apprehended by the police.
