Two men arrested 61M of illegal cannabis seized

Chatham-Kent police seized approximately $6.1 million of cannabis Sunday during a search conducted on Story Street in Blenheim.

Police report the intelligence section, with help from the canine unit seized the illegal cannabis in varying stages of growth as part of an investigation.

A 40-year-old Blenheim man and a 41-year-old Toronto man were arrested and charged with cultivating illegal cannabis contrary to the Cannabis Act, police said.

Both men were taken to police headquarters and later released with conditions and an Oct. 12 court date, police said.

Large scale seizures of illegal cannabis are not new for the police service.

More than 25,000 illegal cannabis plants were seized from between September 2020 and January 2021 as police shut down four major illegal grow operations.

This included more than 9,000 plants with an approximate street value of $9 million seized from a Richmond Street property in early January 2021 and another 8,580 pot plants, worth an estimated $8.6 million seized a week later from Richmond Street property in Chatham.
