Fighting erupted as the US-backed, Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) carried out an operation in al-Hol. This camp is home to more than 55 000 family members of jihadistsincluding hundreds of Europeans.

Automatic weapons and grenades were used during this confrontation.

The SDF said a group of jihadists including two women and five men posing as women attacked Kurdish fighters who were carrying out searches in the camp.

Last month, the SDF carried out a major roundup in an attempt to dismantle the cells of the Islamic State group who create a climate of terror in this camp located 10 kilometers from the border with Iraq. A hundred suspects were arrested during this operation, decided after the murder of three refugees, accused by the jihadists of collaborating with the administrators of the camp.

Since the beginning of this year, around 30 people have been killed in al-Hol by suspected supporters of the Islamic State group.

In early September, the SDF freed four women from the camp who were found in tunnels, chained and tortured by jihadists.
