Two Israeli ministers threaten to resign if the new truce

Far-right ministers also threatened to overthrow the government.

In Israel, two ministers are threatening to resign if the administration accepts the latest truce proposal. Far-right Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir and the Minister of Finance Bezalel Smotrich also threatened to dissolve the country’s government if the agreement was signed.

President of the United States Joe Biden announced the plan on Friday, which includes a cease-fire and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the populated areas of Gaza.

Ben-Gvir described the plan as a total defeat in the war against the extremist organization Hamas. He called it Haaretz magazine as “a flawed agreement that is a victory for terror and a security threat to the State of Israel”. Smotrich again said, according to the newspaper, that he will not accept the agreement without Hamas being destroyed first.

Leader of the Opposition Yair Lapid called the threats of the two ministers on the X-message service, among other things, neglect of national security and abandonment of hostages. According to him, this is “the worst and most irresponsible government in the country’s history”.

Tel Aviv, on the other hand, saw large-scale protests on Saturday, as thousands of people marched to demonstrate in favor of the approval of the agreement and the release of the hostages.

The negotiators called for an agreement

Qatar, the United States and Egypt, which mediated the Gaza conflict, appealed to Israel and Hamas on Saturday to finalize the agreement on the ceasefire and the release of the hostages.

Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated on Saturday that Israel’s goal remains the destruction of the extremist organization Hamas and the release of all hostages.

Hamas, on the other hand, previously let it be understood that it had a positive attitude to Biden’s speeches about, among other things, a permanent ceasefire.
