Two fires at same address lead to arson charges

After a second fire at the same Guysborough Drive address, Woodstock police have accused a 49-year-old Aurora man of arson.

Members of the force’s criminal investigations bureau, with support from its community response unit, drugs and intelligence unit and uniformed officers, searched homes in Aurora and St. Thomas on Nov. 23. Following these searches, police charged the 49-year-old man with two counts of arson and five counts of arson with disregard for human life.

Firefighters responded to first suspicious blaze at the address early in the morning of Oct. 11. A male suspect was seen wearing a dark jacket, jeans and running shoes while allegedly carrying a bag of liquid. The suspect reportedly poured the liquid on two vehicles parked in the driver and lit them on fire. The suspect then fled east in a small two-door sedan, police said.

The first fire caused roughly $200,000 in damage to the vehicles, garage and driveway.

The second fire was reported on Nov. 12.
