Two civilians have been killed in central Kiev in a Russian drone strike on New Year’s Eve, according to Ukraine’s state rescue service.

Six people are also reported to have been injured in the attack, which was aimed at the Petjerskyj area where the presidential palace and several government buildings are located.

The Ukrainian Air Force says over 111 Russian drones were fired at Ukraine overnight, of which 109 were either shot down or disabled by the country’s air defense systems.

“Even on New Year’s Eve, Russia only cares about hurting Ukraine,” President Volodymyr Zelensky writes on Telegram.

In recent weeks, Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly threatened to strike at the heart of Kiev.
