Costner’s favorite westerns are not necessarily insider tips for fans of the genre: The Black Falcon and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance are among the great classics of the genre, among the best films with John Wayne and the best films by John Ford.
Also Clint Eastwood’s Merciless is considered a masterpiece and by many the best Western of the 1990s. As Costner explains, he wanted to film the script himself before Eastwood took the director’s chair.
Some western fans will also resent Costner for his use of Open Range includes your own work in the list. But his decision is perhaps more an expression of pride than megalomania.
