Elon Musk has caused great concern among law professors by announcing that he has officially rebranded Twitter as ‘X’.
The blue bird days of Twitter are gone, and Elon Musk announced on his personal Twitter account that Twitter is now officially called X. This step seems to be the first step in the company’s path towards transforming the text-based app into an all-encompassing app.
Twitter’s ‘X’ logo worries law professors
The Twitter logo has been replaced with the letter ‘X’ and as the rebranding becomes official, law professors like Shubha Ghosh of Syracuse University have warned that Twitter’s new branding could face many lawsuits by companies claiming to interfere with their own branding.
Legal issues come to the fore
According to brand attorney Josh Gurbin, who spoke to Reuters, about 900 other companies that contain the letter ‘X’ have official brands, and not all of these companies will be able to prove that Twitter’s new branding interfered with their own. However, the simplicity of the letter ‘X’ makes the company an easy target to get involved in expensive lawsuits and settlement costs to legitimately obtain a trademark registration for the ‘X’.
Simple ‘X’ could make Twitter the target of courts
Gerben stated the following in his tweet:
“The probability of Twitter/X being sued by both opportunistic and legitimate litigants due to its new name appears to be about 100%. The company has tens of millions (or even 100 million) to obtain trademark registrations for ‘X’ and possibly respond to lawsuits resulting from rebranding. ) can pay legal costs and settlement costs in dollars.”
Twitter’s new branding strategy
It seems certain that Twitter has taken a big step forward by rebranding its social media platform as ‘X’. However, this strategy came with the risk of facing legal challenges. Brand experts and law professors state that Twitter’s new branding may conflict with other companies’ own brands and face claims of trademark infringement.
While Twitter’s new branding strategy brings potential financial problems, some think that Elon Musk can overcome these situations. So what do you think?
