The Austrian Twitch streamer MissRage (34) is currently playing the hardcore version of the MMORPG WoW Classic with the elite streamer guild Onlyfangs. But to her horror, she has now permanently lost her character, a level 41 troll mage, on Boxing Day, 12/26/24. The culprit was an official Blizzard feature that is best left unused.
This was the situation: MissRage was happily jumping around WoW with her Toll Mage and chatting in voice chat when she got stuck somewhere in the world of WoW. She was stuck under a pillar in a destroyed house and asked via voice chat what she could do.
The tension in WoW Hardcore is high, because being so defenseless you can easily lose your character permanently as soon as an opponent comes by.
Someone gave her the fateful advice. “Log out quickly and use /Unstuck.” The streamer tried to escape the situation with the magician spell Blink and another, apparently smarter player asked: “Is your hearthstone ready?”, but the decision was made.
The other voice emphasized again: “There is a button /unstuck, just use it, trust me.” And the Austrian trusted, but seemed slightly unsettled.
The death of a high-level character in WoW Hardcore really hurts the player because he loses hours or even days of playing time:
Streamer logs directly into her end
This was the result: So the streamer was in the dial-in screen, was sent the link for the “Unstuck” command and used the feature, then logged in. As she logged in, she seemed tense, apparently having no idea what to expect.
Logged into WoW, her troll mage was surrounded by a dozen powerful Alliance NPCs who attacked and killed her in seconds. MissRage was able to jump once and then screamed in outrage: her character was dead.
Outdated feature in WoW is not suitable for hardcore version
This was the error: At first glance, the advice to “use the Unstuck feature” looks like something WoW experts would recommend. But that is dangerous half-knowledge. Because it’s true that /Unstuck works to get you to a spawn point and it also says the point is “safe”, but that’s not the case.
The “Unstuck” function teleports the player character to the next spawn point, but is faction-independent. And if you wake up as a Horde character at an Alliance outpost, you will be killed by the NPCs.
On a normal server this doesn’t matter because there’s no disadvantage to being killed by PvP NPCs – but on a hardcore server it’s the same as game over.
How is this discussed? The incident is being discussed extensively on reddit. The consensus is that the guy who tells her “Trust me” should now best hide under a rock. It’s not assumed that there was any bad intention, but he would look very unhappy in the clip. Especially because the other council’s decision to use the Hearthstone, which he overruled, would have avoided this bad outcome.
The main blame lies not with him, but with Blizzard, who are not able to make this function in WoW as “safe” as they promise.
The Unstuck feature is like Russian Roulette in form, since if MissRage had been somewhere else in the zone and closer to the Horde Graveyard, she would indeed have been transported to a safe location.
What would have been better? In any case, MissRage would have had to use the hearthstone or a portal in this situation. If the hearthstone is really on cooldown, then she would have had to wait while logged out for the hearthstone to work.
If necessary, she might have had to contact a GM. But using the “Unstuck” feature, which is now hopelessly outdated, turned out to be a bad idea.
We learn: When strangers say “Trust me” to you in WoW, that is always a reason for skepticism. Even if they mean well. We have more about MissRage on MeinMMO for you in this article: Twitch streamer tells how her boyfriend conquered her heart: “He carried me into LoL”
