Twitch streamer has more viewers than ever before – polarizing culture war revives troubled channel

Twitch streamer Theo “Scurrows” Bottländer’s career has actually been on the wane since Twitch banned streaming from crypto casino Stake. In May 2023, its viewership average had fallen to 1,500. But the streamer has found a way to remain relevant: the streamer rises to the top with an aggressive appearance and a clear image of the enemy.

How was Scurrows’ career on Twitch?

  • Scurrrows was a moderately successful Twitch streamer in 2018, averaging around 2,300 role-playing viewers at the time on GTA 5. But it got a long ban from Twitch for “hateful behavior”.
  • In 2021, Scurrows successfully sued back to Twitch. Now he turned his attention to gambling, where he was able to triple his viewership to 6,041 when he showed Casino. This led to a violent argument at gamescom.
  • In 2022 he was able to continue this success, but in 2023 the number of viewers slipped: After Twitch banned the streams of Casino Stake, the Scurrows channel shrank from month to month. Excluding gambling, Scurrows only had about 1,500 viewers when on air as of May 2023.

What are the numbers now? Scurrows is seeing a huge surge on Twitch:

  • In the last 30 days, he was able to reach 6,027 average viewers – that is 307% more than in the previous period
  • A stream on July 11 was particularly successful: it reached an average of 11,854 viewers, and even 14,974 at its peak. Never before has the streamer had so many simultaneous viewers.
  • Viewership was in a constant downward trend until the falling out with Shurjoka.

How did he achieve that? After the gambling ban, Scurrows began tweeting about topics such as LGBTQ+, gender and transgender issues. He was always provocative and played with cultural tensions that are in the air.

In February, for example, he positioned himself offensively “pro Hogwart’s Legacy” – the role-playing game was a red rag for part of the LGBTQ+ community on Twitter and Twitch at the time. Streamer Shurjoka even called for a boycott.

Streamer accuses Scurrows of misogynist and anti-queer behavior

Ultimately, the streamer Shurjoka attacked him after he was heard in a political talk. However, she did not criticize him for his behavior in this talk, but for his appearance before:

It was about the behavior prior to that, including Scurrows’ entire Twitter history, and it’s not hard to look up the one in which he openly says transphobic, queerphobic, and misogynist things, including various allegations that he has been leveled at harassment of any influencers, including me.

Scurrows reacted with outrage to this video. He ignored the accusation of transphobic, antiqueer and misogynistic statements.

Addressing the “harassment” allegation alone, he said “sexual harassment” is an accusation so serious it could destroy his career.

It should be noted that Shurjoka only spoke of “harassment” – Scurrwos added the component “sexual”.

He triumphantly showed a video from gamescom 2017 in which he had a supposedly normal conversation with Shurjoka, explaining that it was all completely harmless, destroying any credibility of Shurjoka and exposing her as a liar.

Shurjoka replied: There was a second meeting at which Scurrows behaved very differently. But Scurrows denied that.

Now he presented himself as a smart mastermind that nobody can do anything about because he is so intelligent and can prove everything. People shouldn’t attack him, he has “fat fat folders” on everyone.

Scurrows is apparently based on the US streamer Trainwreck, who responded to allegations against him by launching a counterattack on the streamer Mizkif in September 2022, thereby deflecting all criticism and throwing the streamer into a serious crisis.

    Polarization is driving up viewership

Why did that help him so much? The topic of “Scurrows vs. Shurjoka” has become a conflagration on Twitch and Twitter, with various streamers taking positions, reacting to one another and commenting on it.

Scurrows is mainly supported by the two larger content creators, KuchenTV and MontanaBlack, who have been in a clinch with Shurjoka for a long time and benefit financially from railing against the streamers.

Since the beginning of the dispute, Scurrows has been increasingly active on Twitch and is particularly upset about streamers who are politically left-wing, accusing them of taking refuge in a victim role and underlining how difficult it is “as a man”. :

  • He points out that he has proven his own innocence beyond a doubt and that anyone who is still railing against him is actually making a fool of himself.
  • In doing so, he resorts to harsh language and gets bogged down in the issues as if the counter-arguments are so crazy that they are driving him insane

Shurjoka, on the other hand, has withdrawn from social media since the dispute escalated.

Apparently he hits a nerve with his behavior and the image of a battered man “who is not allowed to say anything anymore” and can grow above all through the constant discussion and outrage of his theses on Twitter.

He flanks his success with a large number of short videos on YouTube and TikTok, which US creators have also discovered as a new method to fuel their classic channels on YouTube and Twitch.

For many on Twitch, this now seems like even better entertainment than watching Scurrows play GTA 5 or gambling.
