Twin Flames performance set for Capitol Theater

An acclaimed Indigenous husband-and-wife musical duo will bring their sound to the Chatham Capitol Theater for two shows this week.

Twin Flames, consisting of Chelsey June, a Métis (Algonquin Cree heritage) from Ottawa, and Jaaji, an Inuk and Mohawk from Nunavik and Kahnawake, has received more than 40 awards and nominations, including the 2022 Canadian Folk Music Award for vocal group of the Year.

They will be at the theater for a school performance Wednesday, Oct. 11, in partnership with the St. Clair Catholic District school board, .

Performing in English, Inuktitut and French, with traditional Indigenous and western instruments, they will present an interactive experience that features original songs, stories and an introduction to Canada’s past, present and future from an Indigenous perspective.

Students will learn about realities faced by Inuit and Indigenous peoples over the course of history and the present day.

On Thursday, Oct.12 at 8 pm, there will be a performance open to the general public.

Their music has been described as indie-rock, synth-rock and folk-pop, blended with Indigenous flutes and traditional drums.

The Twin Flames presentation, two weeks after Orange Shirt Day, is a chance to continue learning about the intergenerational impacts of residential schools, and celebrate Indigenous music.

Chatham-Kent Employment and Social Services and the school board are providing funding for the event, resulting in a special price of $5 a student for the daytime performance.
