Anyone who only knows Robert Pattinson as the glittering Twilight vampire Edward has missed the last five to ten years of film history. With roles in films such as High Life, The Rover and The Batman, the star has long since established himself as an outstanding character actor.

To the most impressive Robert Pattinson performances also includes The Lighthouse from 2019, in which he slowly loses his mind in front of the camera in a psychotic chamber play alongside Willem Dafoe (Inside). The shoot was so exhausting that the actor almost became violent towards the director.

In the plot of the film by The Witch director Robert Eggers, the star plays the lumberjack Ephraim Winslow, who is hired as the new lighthouse keeper by the hermit Thomas Wake (Willem Dafoe) in the 1890s. The isolated job soon leads to a rash of strange events and the question arises as to which of the two men will descend into madness faster.

Pattinson himself almost went mad during filming. Before the film’s release, both stars spoke to Interview Magazine about the production. The actors hardly spoke to each other outside of the takes and Pattinson in particular was hardly any interpersonal contact to other people on set.

At one point, the filming was so intense that Pattinson almost became violent:

I’ve never been this close to beating a director. As much as I love Robert [Eggers] also love, at one point I was doing five takes walking on the beach and after a while I was like, ‘What the hell is going on?’ I feel like you’re just going to spray me in the face with a fire hose.’ And he said, ‘I’m going to spray you in the face with a fire hose.’ It was like some kind of torture.

The hard work during filming paid off. With an average rating of 7.4 out of 10, The Lighthouse is one of the most popular films starring Pattinson in the Moviepilot community.
