In the wake of the new Twilight series, which once again adapts Stephenie Meyer’s fantasy books, interest in vampire romance has reignited. Bella actress Kristen Stewart also had to face the question while promoting her new film Love Lies Bleeding: how she evaluates Bella in retrospect – and had a refreshing answer ready.
Kristen Stewart blames vampire Edward for Twilight
Twilight and the four fantasy sequels brought Kristen Stewart worldwide fame. As a teenager, Bella Swan, who falls in love with vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) at her school, she is still unforgettable today, as her interview with the podcast Not Skinny But Not Fat (at minute 20) shows. Here Kristen Stewart defended her character Bella against the suggestive question of not being lovable or too desperate, and also made a personal observation:

[Edward] tried to check whether [Bella] made a decision for himself or not. I would have broken up with him immediately. If I had said, ‘Hey, I want to try this,’ and he had said, ‘No, it’s just for me,’ I would have replied, ‘Well, then THIS is just for me: my whole life. Without you.’
Kristen Stewart sees Bella as a human who wanted to make the decision to become a vampire and this personal choice was denied by Edward. Even if she can understand his protective instinct, it is not his place to set the course of life for the young woman. Even in Twilight 4: Breaking Dawn, Edward’s eventual transformation takes place primarily to prevent Bella’s death during her pregnancy.
